Between noticing and understanding, an idea appears, and slips away. |

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 You think you’ll remember it later, as if an idea behaves like something that belongs to you, something that stays where you left it, on the edge of a thought, somewhere between seeing and understanding. As if it waits. He stands at a crosswalk still on red, though there’s no car in sight. The asphalt glistens faintly, as if it remembers rain that is no longer there. Next to him stands a woman pulling her coat closed, slowly, with a movement that doesn’t match the temperature. Not against the cold, but as if she’s closing something off. He looks. Just a moment longer than necessary. Not at her face, but at that gesture too small to seem meaningful. That’s when it happens. Not as a thought presenting itself, but as a direction without words. Something that has no shape yet, but already carries weight. He knows it before he can think it: this is something. The light turns green. Behind him, someone shifts forward impatiently. He moves with them. One step. Another. The moment doesn’t move with him. Halfway across, it’s still in him, vague but present, like an echo without origin. On the other side, he takes out his phone. Not a choice, more a reflex. A message. Work. Something small that takes up just enough space to push something else out. He reads. Replies. When he looks up, the street is the same. The woman is gone. And the idea, exists only as absence. He slows down. Not to search, but to not immediately lose what he has already lost. The coat. That was the beginning. The way she pulled it closed, without any visible reason, as if something was happening that couldn’t be shared, but briefly showed itself. That was it. He stops. People move around him, brush past him without looking. The city continues as it always does: without registering what lingers. He tries to bring the moment back. Not as it was, but as it felt. What returns is accurate....but carries nothing. A correct memory, without necessity. He stands there a little longer, longer than makes sense, as if time might turn if he just doesn’t move on. But time only takes what you hold. The rest, it leaves behind. He starts walking again. Not different from before, but with something shifted. Something small, almost invisible, but not unimportant. Tonight he’ll try again. He’ll sit, maybe with a drink that helps him slow down, and think: how did it begin? He’ll get close, close enough to feel that it’s almost there. But not close enough to catch it. And then it grows quieter. And somewhere else, in another moment, with someone who looks just a little too long at something no one else sees, it begins again. Not as memory. But as something that, once again, doesn’t stay. 𝑺𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒔 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒓, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒔𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒚 𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒔𝒕. |
