Excuse Me

a brief poem about the break up of a family.

Excuse me

Excuse me.
I cannot see your pain through my eyes.
My tears blind me, so hot they scald as they clear.
Did we survive?

My ragged body no longer my own.
The roar of sadness so loud I cannot hear.
Your pleas for mercy crushed beneath.
That stupid question why, I fear.

Prayers of peace, both yours and mine, hollow.
None can reach the broken nest.
Lost in war are we.
That hopeful place my heart had kept.

Icy as the hands of children torn.
Too soon from mother’s hands they fought.
Who can taste when no water in the sand?
Revenge is sweet, but this is not.

Excuse me.
I cannot think truth, all bathed in lying.
My dreams fed insanity and starved of understanding.
Why are dreams, both yours and mine, always the ones that lie dying?
