The Heavy Weight of Hope

A poignant prose piece exploring the painful cycle of heartbreak, loss, and resilient hope

Life keeps kicking me in the teeth, and I’m running out of ways to pretend it doesn’t hurt.

Every time I start to believe things might finally get better, something else falls apart. Another goodbye. Another disappointment. Another piece of my heart asked to carry more than it was ever meant to hold.

People tell me I’m strong, but they don’t see the nights spent staring into the dark, wondering how much more loss one person can survive. They don’t hear the tears I swallow when nobody is looking. They don’t feel the ache of missing people who are still alive, but so far away they might as well be ghosts.

I’ve spent so much of my life waiting—waiting for good news, waiting for second chances, waiting for the people I love to come home, waiting for life to stop feeling like a punishment.

Sometimes it feels like happiness is a place everyone else gets to visit while I’m left standing outside the door, watching through the glass.

The cruelest part is that I still hope. After everything, I still find myself believing tomorrow might be different. I still love people who have hurt me. I still hold on when every part of me wants to let go.

Maybe that’s why the pain cuts so deep. Not because life keeps knocking me down, but because no matter how many times it does, a part of me still believes there’s something worth getting back up for.

And some days, carrying that hope feels heavier than carrying the heartbreak itself.
