All alone, Pete is being followed by someone who means business.

Don’t Look Back

The gravel crunches loud beneath the heavy tire,
Pete swerves to dodge a phantom in the night,
He’s fueled by gin and a panicked fire,
A glowing shadow haunts his line of sight.

Each frantic turn the persistent stranger mocks,
He grips the wheel, his knuckles turning white,
The mystery driver follows through the rocks,
Just clinging close despite his desperate flight.

Yet fear dissolves into a drunken, dazed guffaw,
He’s towing his poor wife’s car—a fatal flaw.

Line Count: Ten
Prompt: A Suspense Poem.
