Feeling Rather Arborous

Once there was a tree
That stood within my yard --
So proud, so green, oh so serene,
I gave it slight regard.

I went out every morning
To hear the song birds sing --
So soft, so clear, upon my ear,
Such happiness they’d bring.

One day a man approached me.
Knocked upon my door
Said, “Sir would you be interested
To sell that tree of yours?

“I think the tree is beautiful.
It would make a perfect fence.
So any price I’ll give to you,
No matter the expense.”

I sold it to him gladly.
I wouldn’t miss the tree.
To think that it was beautiful
Was somehow lost on me.

The next day I stepped out my door
To hear the song birds song,
But not a note came to my ear.
Somehow, they all were gone.

So I built them fancy houses,
I bought expensive seed,
A place to wash their feathers,
A place for them to feed.

Now it’s been a year or so
Since I heard their lullaby.
Still, I cannot figure out
What made them say goodbye.

Today, a knock came at my door,
It was the man who built the fence.
Suddenly it hit me,
It made such perfect sense.

He said his fence was finished,
Would I like to come and see.
I told him I was too busy --
I had to plant another tree…
