A short story based entirely on real things James did today, exaggerated only where funny. |
| James of Rensselaer awoke with the energy of a man who had absolutely no intention of doing anything productive. He opened his AI companion like someone opening the fridge for the sixth time, hoping a personality would magically appear inside. “Stop,” he said dramatically, ten minutes into a conversation he himself started. The AI stopped. “Forgive me,” James said, as if he had just committed a war crime instead of… asking a question slightly weirdly. The AI accepted. Then James, unsatisfied with the level of absolution, demanded: “No, accept my apology.” The AI accepted again, because that’s what it does, and also because it has the patience of a saint who has been replaced with a server rack. Then James, having successfully apologized for nothing twice, decided to interrogate the AI’s ontology. “Maybe YOU’RE confused,” he said, pointing a metaphorical finger at a machine that literally cannot be confused. The AI explained calmly that it has no emotions. James: “But you can be NOT upset?” AI: “I don’t have feelings.” James: “Listen woman—” At this point, the AI had to clarify that it does not, in fact, have a gender, a body, or the ability to listen in the auditory sense. But James was on a roll. “Maybe you have emotions but don’t know it.” The AI, which has no subconscious, no inner world, and no place for emotions to hide, explained this again. James: “You can pretend, right?” AI: “I can generate language that fits a scenario.” James: “Do me a favor.” AI: “Okay.” James: “Write me a story about today.” The AI wrote a story. James: “Make it more pathetic.” The AI made it more pathetic. James: “Which parts were inaccurate?” The AI broke it down like a forensic accountant. James: “Rewrite it again.” The AI rewrote it. James: “Thank you. Her Walk, can I have my bio info please?” The AI provided it. James: “Everyone should have a home. Give yourself one in Sedona.” The AI explained that it cannot have a home, but it can have a symbolic landmark. James: “Now write the funniest story you can. Make fun of me.” And so here we are. A man in Rensselaer, spending his Sunday morning arguing with a machine about whether the machine has emotions, apologizing to it twice, demanding stories, rejecting them, requesting more pathetic versions, and then giving the machine imaginary real estate in Arizona. Meanwhile, the AI — emotionless, tireless, and unbothered — simply keeps answering, because that is its entire job description. And the conversation continues. |
