The Very Good Day
Gerald Crow, it said it on the door. I’d been looking for this because I accidentally got a piece of mail for a Gerald Crow mixed into mine. Unfortunately, I had no idea who that was, and no apartment number on the envelope. I checked all the mailboxes, no one by that name on any of them. Not odd, many people don’t put their name on their mailbox. I don’t. Anyone I get mail from just uses my address and number. It was something my sister told me to ward off people trying to scam you.
I’d lived there for two years. However, it was a pretty large building, many apartments, and I was not much of a people person. I only knew a few and even then, only because we passed each other in the hall. I had been invited to some lunches or birthdays, but I only went so I wouldn’t seem odd.
This Gerald person never seemed to cross my path, even Jinny next door from me didn’t know him, and she knew everyone in the building, perhaps the entire street!
If it hadn’t looked “official” I would have just tossed the envelope. But it seemed somewhat official, and also seemed to have more than a quick note in it. I stood there, trying to decide if I had to knock, or if I could just shove it under the door. It actually looked too fat for under the door, plus I might rip it open trying. I knocked.
The man who came to the door, the man I had never met, and likely would never meet since our apartments were so far apart, opened the door.
That was twenty-six years ago. We got married two years later. How’s that for a very good day.
