One smile became the lantern that guided my soul through the longest winter of my life. |
| The Smile That Stayed There are winters the world never sees. Not the kind that settle on rooftops, nor the frost that silvers the fields before dawn, but the quiet winters of the soul, those long, unlit seasons when even hope forgets the road home. I have walked through such nights. Nights so vast the stars seemed to retreat from them, as though darkness itself had grown ashamed of its own depth. And yet— somewhere between surrender and survival, there was your smile. Not merely a curve upon your lips, not the fleeting architecture of happiness, but something older, something almost sacred. A lantern carried by a gentle hand through the ruins of my certainty. When grief built its cathedral around me and every door appeared locked, your smile arrived like sunlight slipping through a crack in stone, small enough to seem fragile, powerful enough to transform the room. You never knew what it did. How it gathered the scattered fragments of me one quiet glance at a time. How it persuaded my tired heart to believe in another morning. How it taught the darkness that it was not the only thing capable of filling a horizon. For some lights illuminate the world. Yours illuminated what remained of me. And even now, when memory wanders through the chambers of sorrow, it finds that smile still burning there, a golden ember refusing extinction, a constellation hidden beneath human skin, the last candle in the longest night, and the reason the dawn eventually found my name. |
