Hows the new term treating you? Since arriving in Mountpine I have been hitting the ground running. The first week was an orientation week where our tutors showed us around the facilities and studios and how to use the equipment we are going to use this semester. The numerous variety of facilities is amazing from paper making, a large variety of printing methods and more. I feel this my time to experiment and try out as many art making methods and mediums as possible. This is an art material addicts dream. Talking about an art materials addicts dream I don’t have rely on the colleges art supply store there’s a creative reuse centre in town where we can gently used art materials for a good price. Its run as nonprofit by MPAU. I am definitely going to try out as many different mediums as possible while here. Also I know you like to draw and paint from time to time,So let me know if there’s anything you would like and I will see if I can acquire it. No promises but it’s no problem for me to take a look for you. Also I have been shopping for my dorm room. The dorm room doesn’t have a kitchen, which is why its mandatory to have a meal plan. So I needed to make a trip to target to get a small fridge/freezer and microwave. Then I popped into Best buy to buy a replacement for my laptop as the screen suddenly cracked. My laptop is a several years old, so I don’t think its worth replacing the screen. I decided to treat myself to an apple laptop as PCs don’t seem to last long. Also despite having a landline phone in my dorm room I’ve got myself a pay as you go mobile phone, so I will call you when I figure out when and how to call you. This year I have to complete foundation classes I don’t have a lot choice. However this year is exciting as I have three five hour exploring studio classes where I explore a large variety of mediums, techniques. Also we will be inundated with assignments. I am glad that the studio classes are spaced with a short lecture and seminar classes on the other days. This will give me plenty of time in the workspace. The workspace in a large shared space. Its light airy white room with glorious light coming from the large windows. I love this space and I get up early as possible to be there in the morning before class. I get a lot of painting done, which is helping me to warm up after resting on my laurels all summer. Well this will probably change as the number of assignments increases. The most surprising thing so far is how everyone has the doors open. we were encouraged to keep doors open as often as possible by the RA (residential assistant) during the dorm welcoming event. So it seems to about being appearing hospitable and so they RA can check the rules are being followed. Anyway, how's school going for you? I hope you managed to complete your summer home work, despite your packed summer schedule. I remember year 9 the year you choose your GCSE options. Take your time and choose what you would like to do ignore all expectation this your decision to make, I know you work hard but for your own sake please try to keep your people pleasing to a minimum. There are so many opportunities you have wanted but missed because you worry to much. I know this is going to sound so trite but you have only one life to live, so live true to yourself. Do you have any thoughts what your going to choose for your options? I remember it being quite easy. I chose art for my first one for obvious reasons. Then I found it difficult to decide whether I did Graphic design and then finally I choose Business. I wish I could have chosen to focus on the buying and selling of art work in all forms listening designs, painting and more. I know your options will be completely different just make sure not to take too seriously unless you have a degree, Job etc. in mind that has specific prerequisites. But take your time bur know this isn’t life or death if you make a mistake it will find a way of resolving itself as I am sure you are aware. Sometimes when your middle you need to hold on that because it impossible to see the wood from the trees. Anyways as always take every piece of advice from me with a pinch of salt it not like any of has truly been tried and tested. Thanks for always reminding me of that and keeping me grounded in reality. I can’t stop being sappy while writing this. I will always be on your side. yours, A, *27th September 2007, Dear K, It's the hump of the week and I am just back from four hour painting class. We were given the theme then and now. So I chosen to painting of my child self and myself now. I kept painting and repainting the under painting I don't seem to be able to lock in the composition of the painting. I am going to work more on this painting more tomorrow morning before my life drawing class. I won't bore too much by writing an epilogue about classes and home work. To answer your question yes I have made some friends. I was walking lost in thought and a frisbee hit my head. Then prince charming came running and asked if I was okay. He asked if i needed an ice pack. It was only a very lightweight frisbee and my didn't feel too sore so I shook my head. Turns out his name is Chase and he was playing ultimate frisbee. I feel a bit confused about the rules but its like a netball except you play with frisbee instead of a ball. That reminds me are you back on the netball team this year? I hope you do because its good idea to keep at least one thing you enjoy to get you through. In end I ended up playing ultimate and grabbing the dinner at the cafeteria with chase, Marcus, Emma and Kimberly. Its been great having a meal plan on campus. There's a buffet with a salad bar in the cafeteria. Also we have a Pizzahut and Baskin robins. Baskin Robbins is an ice cream store with a massive variety of ice cream. Still nowhere near as many flavors as that ice cream shop Italy in Jesolo.. Remember how we made an alphabet of ice cream list and played so many rounds of mini golf. I hadn't thought about playing mini in years but Chase and guys are going this weekend so I am going to play. Okay I lost track of time I need to get back to work. I need to work on my papermarche sculpture. I'll tell you more next when I write. Be good, Don't do anything I wouldn't.(jokes) Yours A, *October 3rd 2007, Dear k, TGIF! I have a lot of assignments to do and this weekend I am going to have to buckle down. I am hoping to stay plan on top of things so everything is finished before halloween. We plan i.e. Chase and the usual suspects are planning on trick treating for the food bank and finishing the night off dropping into party. Apparently halloween is a big as Christmas the houses are going to be decked out with cobwebs, gravestones and things that go bump in the night. This weekend will be mainly spending in the painting studio I have painting I need make a lot of progress before Crit class this week coming. This class makes me nervous as this is when both my professor and peers give feedback on my artwork I am currently working. Then we meant to apply the feedback when finishing off the work. I also have a couple essays due but I am working little and often writing for an hour or two each day between classes. So between that and actually making art I feel slightly overwhelmed. Hopefully I will find time to call you as I found out my roommate will be off she's missing her boyfriend back in Germany. I asked if she minded if you used her bed during winter break and she agreed. youl will love it the snowy pine trees and mountains, this town is like hallmark greetings card, no exaggeration. Also if your worried about missing Christmas dinner, I already have an invite from P and I explained that you might be visiting and if you did would be okay to bring,. She has agreed. Everyone has been so welcoming so I think it would be fun to spend Christmas together. I have to get back to the grind. Yours, A *October 24th 2007 Dear K, It was lovely talking to you the other week, It's been difficult to find to call being that we're on different time zones and assignments. You sound like your going through a tough spot at the moment. All I can say is hang in their and don't let what's going on at home affect your schoolwork. I would suggest calling grandmother to stay her for a while if the drama is disrupting you sleep and schoolwork. I am sure she would be happy to have the company. You don't need to weather this on your own. You need to overcome your guilt of asking for help. No one expects you to deal with all your problems yourself. On a happier note I was wondering have you gotten around to asking about coming over here for a few weeks during winter break so we can spent Christmas together. No pressure I know its difficult to find the right time to ask but we're running out of time and before you know it will be Christmas. I finally decided what I am going to be for halloween. A slutty nurse. (jokes) I am actually going to be a grim reaper. I went to Party til you drop a party supplies and costumes store. . I got the needed make up and black cloak and sickle. I am really excited were going to a haunted maze, which sounds like being an extra in an Ed Gein inspired movie the day before halloween as its open the entire week. I am at the studio and need to go back to painting. So I am going to love. you and sign off. Yours, A 5th Nov 2007, Dear K, I am so excited that you are going to be visiting me over winterbreak. Remember when we use to wish for snow so we could make a snowman? Here they had enough snow to make a snowman three times my height. also this make you laugh when I went snow shoeing in the valley over this wekend I noy kept sinking so deep into now every few minitues but I ended up falling hed first into the snow the first few steps I took. In end `I ended up with my friend a in the cafe enjoy hot chocolate. Anyways don't worry the clear the snow and lay salt on the pathways on campus and around town so we need snow shoes. I view from my dorm room the mountain view and the wooden houses covered in snow. I don't think this view is forever be etched in my mind. I know I haven't been here very long but it does feel more like home than actual home. The people at the university have been so accepting and welcoming. I am aware this is the honeymoon phase, so I am not making rash decisions. I can't anyway I am going to get throug college and deal with it nearer the time. Things may have changed by then I've bought myself four times American colleges give you an extra year to think. I got invited by chase to come family home for thanksgiving dinner as he is a local. They invite a lot of people over ,which sounds so fun. I already have tried pumpkin pie as they sell by the slice in the campus bakery and its delicious. Apparently chases mother makes a homemade with her own homemade pumpkin puree instead of tinned pumpkin. It sounds amazing. will write soon! Yours, A 30th November 2007, Dear K, Thanks giving was great thanks for asking. Chases family were very welcoming. Although it feels like they get the wrong end of the stick. They seem to have the impression I am the new girlfriend. I gently corrected them that were just friends as the moment getting to know each other. I really don't want to rush into a relationship considering my social skills deficit. Moving on to the food the turkey was so moist and the stuffing was cranberry and walnuts and its the best I've ever had. Well I've had homemade stuffing before its a definitely an upgrade from the boxed stuffing mix we using at Christmas. They don't serve individual vegetables like we do they make them into casseroles like the three beans one. This one was particularly special as they use recipe handed down. The whole family was there both sets of grand parents, aunts, uncles cousins and neighbors. They were very lively and good sports they joined in a friendly football match after dinner. If your wondering how that many could fir around the table, the answer is chases family own a ranch and they have large dining room space. It's a few hour drive from campus. They have a guestroom so I stayed over the thanksgiving hotel, which was nice change of scenery. With thanksgiving done now its the count down to Christmas. I am looking forward to your visit. Yours, A -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- . |
