A story about finding that which was lost using string |
|
At the edge of the moonlit kingdom stood a shop that sold impossible things. Bottled thunder. Secondhand dreams. Maps of places that had never existed. Mara, her hair dusted with snow from the long journey, entered, her toes and fingers nearly numb from the cold. Behind the counter, an old woman measured a length of silver string between her fingers. “I need a weapon,” Mara said. “The dragon wakes tonight.” The shopkeeper shook her head side to side. “Weapons are for killing. I know who you are and you need something for remembering.” For the briefest of moments, Mara remembered a laugh she'd spent years trying to forget. The shopkeeper handed Mara the string. It seemed ordinary, until it tightened around her wrist and magically transported her to the mountain. At the summit, the dragon uncoiled itself from the bare rock face, it's bulk vast enough to blot out the stars. Fire gathered behind its teeth. Mara raised the string. The silver thread flew from her hand and wrapped around one blackened claw. The dragon froze. Images flashed along the string: a small winged creature chasing butterflies, a child laughing beside it, a promise made before kingdoms rose. The dragon lowered its head, the fires from its mouth growing dark. “Mara?” it whispered. She stared into its golden eyes and recognized the soul trapped inside. Her brother. The curse had not killed him. It had only made him forget. Mara wrapped the string around them both. “Come home,” she said. Together, they descended the mountain. By morning, the shop had vanished. Only a wooden sign remained in the snow: SOLD OUT OF IMPOSSIBLE THINGS. Words: 278 Written for Daily Flash Fiction Challenge July 19, 2026 Include the words Shop,String, and Toes in the story. |
