Surrounded

Write a poem listing and connecting mundane objects around you.

I have this habit of surrounding myself,
like a fortress, perhaps,
with meaningful things--
perhaps mundane to others, but I
don't do mundane.

First and foremost are books:
these are my treasures. Two-hundred-plus-year old
two volume Shakespeare, a first edition of
The Man Who Laughs,
the books of my friends and my authors,
and my books as well. These are the treasures.

Notebooks, pens, sticky pads, cell, and my computer:
the tools of my trade.

Inevitably, a cup of (probably) lukewarm coffee.

And then, sitting high above, or flying overhead--my dragons and owls.
Good friends, they, ever protecting, inspiring me onward.
