The Escape

Sometimes the hardest place to escape is from within.

I tried to run away from all the sorrow and pain,
chasing the sunlight through oceans of rain.
I searched for a place where my heart could be free,
but the cage I escaped was built inside of me.

Little did I know I was going insane,
losing myself while escaping the same.
The more I was running, the less I could see,
that I was losing the person I used to be.

I painted my dreams with colors of gold,
hid all the stories I never had told.
I built up a castle where nothing could break,
not knowing the walls were beginning to shake.

I begged for a moment where silence would stay,
a place where my darkness would fade away.
But somewhere between who I was and who I became,
I lost my own shadow and forgot my own name.

So now I stand here, still learning how to breathe,
holding the pieces I thought I should leave.
Maybe the answer was never to flee,
maybe I had to face the parts of me I refused to see.
