Mac falls asleep on the doorstep. Ora is not pleased. |
One Way to Get Some Rest “Mac, wake up!”He turned over and opened one blood-shot eye. “What did you wake me up for, Ora? I was sleeping nicely.” “More like passed out! Get in here before the neighbors see!” “I swear I only had one pint,” “Do you always sleep outside the door when you’ve only had one?” “I must have knocked myself out when I tripped,” Mac insisted pointing vaguely to the ground. Ora looked where he pointed. “I don’t see a stone or anything else that could have tripped you.” “Are my bootlaces untied?” “You’re wearing slip-ons." Finally, she took pity on him, helped him up and into the house. After seating him in his favorite chair, she made him coffee and toast. “I had one pint, honest, honey,” he repeated as she handed him his breakfast. “Perhaps you should drink at home, save yourself the ‘trip’,” his wife suggested. “You made a joke; you forgive me then?” Mac asked after his first sip of coffee and bite of toast. “I know you believe you only had one pint, but I think those barflies you hang out with keep topping it up when you’re distracted.” “My mates wouldn’t do that!” “I’m certain sure they would, so they can laugh at you behind your back.” Ora sat beside Mac in her own favorite chair. “I worry about you. You had a heart attack last year. I was sure I was going to lose you.” “But you didn’t, old girl, I’m still here,” Mac said as he took her hand and held it. “Promise me you’ll go down to the pub, say once a week instead of every second day,” Ora said as she squeezed his hand. “All right, dear! I’ll try it. For about a week or so.” |
