A wrong door leads to an unforgettable lesson about curiosity and second chances. |
| On the first morning of my new job, I unlocked the wrong office. The room looked ordinary enough: a desk, a lamp, a bookshelf, and an elderly man calmly watering a fern. He looked up, smiled, and said, "You're early." "I'm sorry," I stammered. "I think I've made a mistake." "So did I," he replied. "Forty-three years ago. Sit down." Against all common sense, I did. For ten minutes he spoke about missed trains, accidental friendships, and why every successful career depended on opening the wrong door once in a while. The conversation was interrupted when a woman burst into the room. "There you are!" she laughed. "I've been looking everywhere." She spotted me, folded her arms, and pointed toward the hallway. "Get out of here." I shot to my feet, apologizing so quickly the words collided with each other. The old man winked as I backed through the doorway. "Remember," he called after me, "wrong rooms sometimes contain the right lessons." Later that afternoon I discovered he had retired six months earlier. His office had been emptied, and no one knew what fern I was talking about. My actual desk was three doors down. I've never unlocked the wrong office again. Sometimes I wonder if that's a sign I've become more careful... ...or less curious. Max 300 word - daily flash fiction contest |
