Trent saves a lady from a terrifying situation.

Incident in Dark of Night

Trent was taking his usual stroll past the park at night. Suddenly, he heard a long scream.

“Leave me alone!”

He rushed toward the sound. He came across a couple struggling in the grass. He shone his flashlight toward them; which startled them into looking up.

“Darlene? Is that you?”

“Leave us alone, can’t you see this is a private moment?” The male voice was also familiar.

“Get off of her, Colin!”

Trent reached over and helped the woman up.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Take your slimy hands off my fiance!”

“You haven’t put a ring on it that I can see,” Trent replied.

Colin began to sputter. Trent put his jacket over Darlene’s shoulders and began to walk away beside her.

He saw stars when he felt a blow to the back of his head. He shook it off and kept walking. Another blow hit him. This time he turned.

“Assaulting an officer will put you in jail, asshat.”

“You aren’t any kind of an officer!

“Darlene, reach into the inside pocket of my jacket and pull out what you find there.”

She passed it to him. He flipped it open and showed Colin.

Trent watched him deflate, then began to walk Darlene home.

“When did you become a cop, Trent?” Darlene asked.

“Just finished the Academy last week.”

They got to her door and Trent watched her unlock it.

“Thank you,” she said and planted a kiss on his cheek.

“My duty and always my pleasure.”

“Call me some time,” she smiled as she walked through the door and closed it.

Trent stood there for a few seconds, touching his cheek with wonder. Then, he turned slowly and headed for home and sleep. Then it hit him.

“I don’t know her number!”
