SEPARATION

short poem

For years I have
lived with a television
but today decided
that we should divorce
so I called the provider
told them we're through
they said there would be
a charge for separation
I said well isn't that how it goes
when you want to divorce your television
there was silence on the other end
I wanted to laugh but held back
then looked over at the television
I have lived with for oh so many years
a woman was crying on the screen
I sat with my phone in hand
as the provider asked the same
question over and over and over
