God was not invited...

The wedding of the year was missing someone...

God was not invited
to the big wedding in New York.

The Whore of Babylon
came dancing with the beast
from the football fields.

Celebrities gathered,
drawn from every branch
of the glittering elite.

An actor played the vicar.

Vows were invented -
comedic,
creative,
crafted for the moment,

expressing love
with muscles and beauty,
with music and sport,
with spectacle -

with one eye fixed
on the picture,

making sure
the picture would make a profit.

And the news would trickle out,
slowly, carefully,
a little more tomorrow,
a little more the day after...

a revenue stream
flowing for years
from a single day.

Billionaires profiting
from the great occasion.

Perhaps they never intended
for eternity to enter the room.

Perhaps they never wanted God
to make the vows everlasting...
to bind them beyond
the reach of contracts,
pre-nups,
escape clauses.

After all,
the reasons for a good divorce
take time to build.

Betrayal needs a history.
Heartbreak needs a story.
Songs need to be written
about what was lost,
about the lies,
about the breaking of the promise.

The whole thing planned
before it happened.

The spectacle.
The profit.
The joys and the anguish.

Even the break-up songs
waiting to be written.

And God...

God was not invited.
