The Function of Memory

Make a list
things to tell
things to whisper
things to forget

bars of a cage
counted complete

I should try and think hard
try to forget
try to recall
act as if

Raise the bucket
lift the dipper
let it fall
untested.

You can't slake thirst
or pain
with spinning ladles
of truth unmingled
at memory's well.
