Elusive Wondering

Created from a dream I had long ago that still comforts me.

How can I love someone I barely know?
How can I long for one I've not seen?
How can I give myself to one I've never met
except for once within a dream?

You took my hand in yours
and vowed to always protect me.
I felt completely safe with you,
and strangely, I felt carefree.

Yet there is a certain cruelty with dreams
in that they do not last forever.
Wakefulness took you from me
and our relationship did wakefulness sever.

Where are you my fiery knight?
Why have you not come back to me?
I gave you my heart despite the fact
that you are a dream and not reality.
