In Japan, it's the custom to see the dawn on New Years. This was my first, long ago.

Predawn Trail

I venture on predawn trail
Constricting shadows tower
Sparkling gems illuminate

I exhale mortal clouds
Straining dampness irritates
Tired muscles sear

I cajole my legs forward
Entwining mists swirl
Dead leaves crackle

I reach the hilltop
Intrusive thoughts vanish
New year dawns
