Villanelle written about the French Revolution for a contest. |
| Listen not to Voltaire's sweet song, Nothing that we love is at stake; Dance on, my lady, dance on. To reason with them takes too long After all, what sense does it make? Listen not to Voltaire's sweet song. You see we have done nothing wrong; Starving children? Let them eat cake Dance on, my lady, dance on. Enlightenment does not belong: The term itself makes my head ache; Listen not to Voltaire's sweet song. The peasant force is not that strong, Were we to fall, the earth would quake. Dance on, my lady, dance on. Revolution? We are lifelong! Our great reign they can not unmake! Listen not to Voltaire's sweet song, Dance on, my lady, dance on. ----- Update 7/1/05 - This piece has won me the following merit badge for Romance: in a contest hosted by Lynn
