Megan and Randy wanted to make a tree house. It became an adventure of a life time.

Contest Prompt

“You can hide in the leaves,” Megan whispered. “If you are quiet, no-one knows you are here.

Randy hung onto his branch for all he was worth. “You said there was a house up here.”

Megan giggled, “I said there was going to be one. We’re going to make a tree house.”

The wind rocked the limbs the two kids sat on. It was like riding wild horses that never grew tired. Randy reached up and tugged Megan’s leg. “You said only birds came here. Look. How’d that get up here?”

Megan’s cat, Fluffy, curled her tail under her where she’d perched on her own limb. The squirrel she’d chased scolded her from a perch even higher.

Just then, a Robin landed in his nest, fed three babies a long worm, and took off again. “It’s getting crowded in here,” Randy said, wondering who or what might arrive next.

“We’ll have to be careful where we build our tree hut,” Megan whispered. “Let’s begin.”

It was hard work, but the shade from the big oak tree helped keep them cool. Mother Nature, herself, provided all the materials the two kids needed. Strong limbs from a fallen Birch tree were wedged in place to frame the tree house floor. Smaller ones were pushed together to finish that part.

“Are we done?” Randy gasped, stopping to catch his breath. Megan had made it easier climbing the big, thick trunk. She’d nailed more limbs in place to make a climbing ladder. “I think we should have chosen my Apple tree. I’m getting hungry.”

“Quiet. Someone’s coming.”

Below them, two strangers appeared. They knelt among the tall weeds and opened two bags they were carrying. “That’s Mom’s best silverware!” Megan hissed.

“And that’s Dad’s coin collection!” hissed back Randy. “What are we going to do?”

“Let’s watch!” whispered Megan. And that’s just what they did.

The strangers dug a hole in the weeds. They used dead branches to make a box inside the hole and placed the two full bags inside. When they slunk away proud of what they’d done, Megan and Randy climbed down.

“”Quick, before one of them returns. We have to lift the bags up into our tree house.”

Just when they finished, one of the robbers came back to steal both bags for himself.

“Caught you!” yelled the second robber coming up behind. He got mad when he saw the treasure was gone. “Where’d you hide it?”

They yelled so loud at each other, it attracted the police who were searching for them. Both were caught.

Megan and Randy surprised their parents with the lost treasure.

As a reward, both Megan and Randy’s Dad’s, finished building the kids tree house. They did such a good job, it looked even cuter than the ones each family lived in.

There was a birdhouse for birds, a hollowed out apartment for the squirrel, and a cat door for Fulffy to come in. Everyone had fun decorating and making it their home away from home.
