Meet Henry Bemis - A bookish little man whose passion is the printed page. |
| Henry Bemis LOVES to read - In this scene from the Twilight Zone episode, "Time Enough at Last" (click on the attached link below) poor Henry sneaks a copy of a book of poetry ๐ into his jacket prior to leaving their home with his shrewish wife Helen for an outside engagement. When she catches Henry with the book, she taunts (plays) him by suggesting he read some of the poetry to her, only to discover she has previously redacted โ๏ธโ๏ธ the entire book, and this is AFTER she had snuck-up behind him, reached over and snatched a newspaper ๐๏ธ๐๏ธ out of his hands he was reading at the dining room table. Doggerel - Definition: Means poorly written, trivial, or silly poetry. Helen Bemis refers to her husband Henryโs love of poetry as "silly, ridiculous, nonsensical doggerel" to express her cruelty and contempt for his intellectual, solitary pursuits and to rationalize her abusive, controlling behavior. Ultimately, the term is used to show her anti-intellectual, abusive nature, treating his cherished literature as garbage. Of course, there's a lot more to the story than just the above scene. It you're a writer/author, book lover/reader, and especially if you're a fan of the original series "TheTwilight Zone" and you've never seen this episode, I encourage you to do so. For those of you who may have viewed this previously, you might enjoy the nostalgia of watching it again.
