In the 1930's, on the outskirts of Pomerania, Poland, a young entrepreneur had an idea to start a business in the midst of the Great Depression. He decided to plant a grove of pine trees in the hopes of selling them to local villagers for a small fee at Christmas. He thought he had considered everything it would take to build his enterprise. He researched how many acres he would need, how many feet apart the trees would need to be, the irrigation system needed for the area, and when to plant the trees to make sure he had purchasable trees each season for years to come. What he hadn't planned on was the bears and the bears ended up being the one thing he should have considered.

He planted the saplings in rows at the distance recommended in the books he had read. They stood straight in the sunlight, and barely swayed when the spring wind blew. They grew healthy and strong until the summer of the second season. That was when he noticed that the trees were bent at the trunk. Just about two feet above the ground, they each had a bit of a bend. He tried to surmise what caused the trunk to bow out. He gathered strong stakes and tied the trees but the next week when he went to check on them, sure enough, the stakes were broken and the trees were bent. No one in the town could figure out what was happening but he worried about the future of his investment.

One day he ventured out to the grove in the very early morning, when the dew was just lifting off the underbrush. That was when he encountered the bears. They were at his saplings, and they were the ones bending them. The bears were scratching their bare bear bums on the trees. As they rubbed up and down, side to side, wiggling their behinds, they were bending the trees. Our young entrepreneur was so delighted at the sight of these innocent creatures that he left them be. That is how the Crooked Forest became the home of the bent trees, and the bears come each summer, not just to scratch their bums but to sit in the old crooked trees.

377 word count

The Crooked Forest
Location: West Pomerania, Poland

This Polish forest lives up to its name, with hundreds of peculiar pine trees. Several hundred pine trees were planted there in the 1930s and grew with an almost 90-degree bend at their base, making them look like fishing hooks. Some believe that a technique or human tool was actually used to make the trees curve this way, while others speculate that a winter snowstorm or some other damage could have given this fascinating forest its interesting shape.

Give us your own creative reason why the trees are this way.

As I looked at the Jack-o-Lantern, it seemed to be looking back at me. Then…it winked at me. It started rocking back and forth. Soon it was doing the Monster Mash, he was a graveyard smash. The purple people eater joined the fray, as the talking trees began to sway. Dracula and ol Frankie boy were looking for a town to destroy. Wolfman and the mummy were talking to the ventriloquists dummy. Ghosts and goblins galore raided the local grocery store. Everyone was having a ball the young the old, the short the tall. No one knew what fun there'd be all gathered under the hanging tree. All of a sudden the moon did rise and all the monsters looked for the prize. A giant pinata from the devil's pit arose from near where the witch did sit. After they all took swing the large church bell began to ring. Soon everyone headed to bed the few alive and all those dead.

If you could create your very own monster, what would it look like?
What would it be called? What types of things would it do to scare people?
Where does the monster live?
Tell me everything there is to know about your monster.

My monster is called McGIllicutty. He is green with black spots all over his body. Long, brown, unkempt hair falls over his shoulders. He has two silver horns on top of his head. They twist to sharp points on the ends. His nose is long and his ears point up to the sky. There is black hair that curls out from his ears. His teeth are large, sharp and yellow, they seem more like fangs than teeth! The knuckles of his fingers and toes are covered with brown fur, and the nails are long and can slice through metal with one swipe.

He lives in the caves just south of town. This is where he collects the bad children he finds. If he hears a parent reprimanding their child, he will sneak into the house at night and steal them away. He keeps them until they are sorry for what they have done. They must promise to never misbehave ever again! Oh, and he smells. The dampness of the cave makes mold and mildew grow on McGillicutty. He never bathes so you can smell his odor from the other side of town! HE peeks into windows on moonless nights and will move yard furniture around to warn children of his existence! The children try to behave as much as they can because they do not want to run into him. He holds them as slaves in his cave!

If he finds adults mistreating children, their fate is worse. He will disembowel them and leave them hanging in the trees in the town square. He has never been seen except by the children and no one has ever been close to catching him! This is one monster NO ONE wants to be around!

Hillary Clinton turns 70 today! Wish her a happy birthday (if you're so inclined) and write up a candidacy speech for your own head of government campaign.

Happy Birthday, Hillary! I am so sorry your husband is what I would consider a dirt bag...can I say that? I did vote for him twice and you maybe once...LOL!

Friends, Writers, Countrymen, lend me your ears! I am hear on behalf of myself to rally the underachievers! You know who you are. The people who spend all weekend on their asses watching television! The ones who swear at the television when a politician comes on, telling lies and spewing nothingness! Yes, you, flannel man. You keep saying you want change but you stay on your butt and DO NOTHING! Here, vote for me. I will sit on my ass and represent you. And you, woman of the hour who wants everything better but won't do anything about it. Vote for me, I won't do anything, either! Nothing will change except who you are mad at!

YOU NEED TO ACT! Get off your high horses and change the government! Join a local group and initate change in your town. Maybe it will spread and change will occur on a larger front! Maybe, it won't but at least you did something about it! We can't just complain and not do anything! IT is time to act. Get involved! Have your voice be heard! Susan B Anthony didn't just sit and complain about not being able to vote, she did something! Frederick Douglass didn't just complain about slavery! We need to make a stand...and WE need to do the standing!

You might not like Hillary but at least she ran for government and stood up!
You might not like Trump but at least he ran for government and stood up!
All these politicians are standing up, but you are sitting and complaining!
STAND UP! STAND UP! STAND UP and BE HEARD!

On October 25, 1616, the Dutch discovered Australia. Write a journal entry as one of the explorers

Oct. 25th; From the deck of the ship we could see the land ahead of us. Beautiful white sand beaches sprawl from the edge of the water. We spent the last few days traveling around the land mass and have discovered it is an island. We have yet to see any people inhabiting the island, but one never knows what may be lurking in the dense forest beyond the beach. We make landfall tomorrow

Oct. 26th; A few of us have ventured past the beaches and into the dense under brush. None of us have seen anyone inhabiting the area. But the animals are unbelievable. They have these cute little bear-like things living up in the trees. They are adorable and they must be very old because they have tufts of hair on their ears like my grandfather. There are several animals with the biggest saucer eyes I have ever seen. We don't see them much during the day but we have noticed them out at night. Our naturalist surmises that the large eyes are to see better at night. I think it is to attract mates. The most amazing animal thus far has been the giant pouched rabbits they have here. Unfortunately, we lost one of our shipmates to the rabbit because he got too close to it. That damn animal rocked back on it's huge long tail (not little cotton tail) and WHAM! He blasted our friend right into a tree. The poor guy was just about to get up when one of the Gramps bears dropped from the tree and gouged his eyes out. I don't particularly care for the animals here. Maybe our naturalist will have better luck with the pretty frogs we have seen. Wait! I see a human! He appears to have a long stick in his mouth... I will appro...thud. *got hit with a poison dart*

In 1964 today, Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre won the Nobel Prize for Literature and turned it down. Make up a reason why.

Jean-Paul was well known as a reactionary among literary scholars. He decided to not accept the prize because of the name. You see, the Noble Gases on the Periodic Table of Elements do not react with any other elements. They are plain jane, non reacting elements. They are perfectly fine all by themselves and that upset Jean-Paul. He felt that if he accepted the award no one would take his literature seriously and it would lead to a complacency that would plague the world for generations. Thus, he left the award on the podium. His name was called and there was complete silence. Later. when interviewed about the situation, the author gave a memorable response. He brought a lone purple Helium balloon. Just as the interview he untied the balloon and sucked in the gas inside of it. With his voice raised at least two octaves, making him sound like a munchkin, he replied to the reporter, "Noble, my ass!" and stormed out of the room.

After sucking in the helium, his lung filled with the helium gas, Jean-Paul walked up thirteen flights of stairs. At the top of the last flight, just as he was opening the door, he gasped for air. Nothing rushed in, the helium permanently damaged his lungs. He collapsed and died, never realizing that the Nobel Prize was not named after the Noble gases! At his funeral, several of his friends sucked in helium and sang Amazing Grace. Others, in honor of his untimely passing, released black helium balloons. One author, brought a hydrogen-filled balloon and as the dirt was thrown into the grave, lit the balloon. As it exploded, this author, who shall go unnamed, through himself into the grave and lay prone across the coffin, exclaiming over and over, "oh the humanity"! It was quite the sight to behold.

We'll be focusing on history this week!

On this day (October 21) in 1949- Aldous Huxley writes George Orwell to congratulate him on the novel, 1984. If you were dictator of the world, what would you do?

Well, that was quite a week! I visited my cousins last weekend and basically had no internet access for two days. It wasn't nearly as bad as you would think. *Confused* There are very few cell towers in their area, so I couldn't even call my husband when I got there. Thank God for landlines! *Laugh* Then I worked Monday thru Friday and by the time I punched in on Friday I already had worked 38 hours and 37 minutes. My classes start back up on Tuesday so since Friday I have been trying to finish my homework, which I must add I finished this evening which means I can relax on Monday! Or I can start the homework for the next week! *Crazy*

As far as being a dictator for the whole world. I can't even manage to be a dictator for my house! Everyone is always playing on my emotions and I end up losing my s***! If I get pushed to the end of my limits, I withdraw and attempt to sink into my work. If left to run the world, I would probably take on every job and attempt to finish it myself. It is like I can not trust anyone else to do it. Who else can do a job better than me. Why delegate work when I know what needs to be done and the best way to do it. I would be horrible as a world leader, sometimes I am horrible as any type of leader!

That being said I am trying to work on this habit of mine. I am attempting to delegate things when I can or need to. Just because I CAN do it doesn't mean I have to. Trying to do everything can lead to burn out and stress. I have enough of that without adding more on!
So...tomorrow is another day and I don't need to do EVERYTHING by myself.

A week from today is World Food Day . What is your favorite food? What about when you were a child? Feel free to share a recipe, and if you do, make sure to post it into "The WDC Cookbook" as well.

One of my favorite foods is my Mom's homemade blue cheese dressing. I will admit, it is not for everyone. Not everyone can handle the bold flavor of blue cheese! I, personally, LOVE IT! I can eat the stuff plain, on crackers, or as a dressing or dip. The more veins of blue/green yummyness with in the chunk, the better the flavor. My favorite use for the wonderful stuff is for blue cheese dressing. My mom got the recipe from a next door neighbor, and it calls for 2 to 4 ounces of blue cheese. When my mother went to make it, she misunderstood the directions and put in 2 four ounce packages of cheese in the recipe! Let's just say that the error has been made every time since then!

My mom usually made it for the holidays because it can be pretty expensive to make for a large gathering. This is especially true when the people are putting it on their salads, their ham, their veggie platter carrots and celery, and anything else they can find! I was the most notorious for eating more than my fair share during family dinners! Now, I make a batch for holidays myself. The only 'problem' is that no one else will eat it! My husband won't touch the stuff because the cheese is moldy and my mother-in-law can't stand the taste and smell of it. This is terrible because now I have to eat the whole bowl of it. Yup, every spoonful is MINE! I eat it on everything and sometimes eat it by itself, and there is NO ONE to tell me not to! It makes life so difficult! 'sigh'

Here is the recipe (which I am sure my mom won't mind me sharing... I hope someone enjoys it (it is great for dipping chicken wings in, too)

Blue Cheese Dressing

• 1 cup Mayo
• 1 cup Sour Cream
• 1 ½ tsp Lemon Juice
• 1/8 tsp Garlic Salt
• 1/8 tsp Celery Salt
• 8 oz Blue Cheese ( the bluer the better)

Blend all except cheese.
Crumble cheese and add.
Refrigerate 24 hours.

This week is focused on National Days. *Ha* Starting with today, which is National Frappe Day ! Do you prefer your drinks hot or cold? What kind of blended drinks do you like?

Well, I guess since I 'stretched' yesterdays prompt to fit what I wanted to write about, I guess I will stay on point today! I will stick to the subject Brother Nature . (It's my blog and I'll write what I want to, write what I want to, write what I want to)

I don't really have a preference for either hot or cold drinks on a regular basis. It really depends on my mood and the weather.

On the really cold mornings in Rochester, I usually stop at Dunkin and get an xl hot coffee. But not just any coffee, it needs to have the flavorings in it. In the fall, I get the maple pecan flavor, and for the holidays it is peppermint mocha. That is unless Dunkin comes out with some other yummy flavor. I really do not like pumpkin spice, anything! A couple days a go I ordered a maple pecan hot coffee on the way to work and because the coffee was so hot I didn't try it until half way there. Sure enough, they made it pumpkin spice, since I NEEDED the caffeine I suffered through it , but DAMN that was nasty!

In the Spring, Dunkin brings out ice cream flavors which are wonderful! I really enjoy the butter pecan flavor, but sometimes I get either the cookie dough or pistachio flavors. These go well in the iced coffee but if the weather changes, I will get a hot coffee then as well.

The best thing about Dunkin is I had a gift card from a few years ago and I put the app on my phone. After you use the app a certain amount of times and accumilate points, you can get a free drink, of ANY value. That is when I get the expensive drinks. Usually, it is as frozen coffee but sometimes in the winter I will get a latte.

I would drink them more often but I don't like spending that much money, so I use auto pay on the app. Each month I put $15 on the card. When the money is gone so are my coffee runs! The Vet Office I work at does have a Keurig so I at least get my caffeine fix when I need it! My favorite k-cup is the Donut Shop Cream Puff flavor coffee. I don't need to add any cream to it, but I still use a ton of sugar!

October 6 Prompt:

Write about a memorable encounter with a stranger. Even if it is fiction

The late autumn night was dark and stormy. An electricity cut through the humid air. Lights flickered along the street, casting eerie shadows along the darkened buildings. I hurried, trying not to drop the bags of groceries i just purchased, avoiding puddles and dark alleyways. Approaching a large ominous gap between buildings, the streetlights flickered and then went completely dark. I heard footsteps behind me, so I increased my pace. The faster I walked, the closer the footsteps got, until I could feel a hot breath on the back of my neck. I dropped the bags, listening to the cans roll into the gutter, and I ran as fast as I could. Whatever was following me was still there, closing in.

I ran across the street, hoping to zigzag enough to lose the stranger, but I missed the curb and tripped, scraping my knee and breaking the heel on my shoe. Now, the stranger was upon me. I could feel his hot breath in my face. His hands were covered in fur and he smelt like wet dog. When lighting flashed, I could see his large canines, droplets of drool hanging just above my lips. He brought his face closer and then...

he licked me. It was a large puppy! I had seen him before and now he was upon me. He wore no collar and when I had him scanned, there was no microchip found. The veterinarian said he was about a year old and a very healthy pup. Being part German Shepard and part who knows what, he was a big boy and VERY protective! We have no idea how long he had been living on the streets but he was well-mannered. Now, I don't need to walk the streets alone ever again and neither will he!

October 5th - Prompt

Write about the person that has had the biggest impact on your life.

No modesty. No shame. No self-doubt. I, yes I, have had the biggest impact on my life. I have made the decisions that have lead me to right here. Good or bad, this is where I am. This is who I am. This is what I am. My when is now. I and I alone am how I got here! Whether I made the right decision or just made the right decision for right then, I have chosen the road I have traveled. I put down every brick and placed each foot on them. I don't know what would have have happened if I had turned left instead of right. What if's will ruin a life. I live for now and I live for next. I can't keep looking over my shoulder, second guessing every decision I have made.

What if I had paid more attention in college and actually had made it to Vet school? I can't waste anymore time thinking about it. I have spent 25 years looking back and wondering! It is well past time to turn a blind eye and focus on the forward. What if, when I crashed my bike into the mailbox when I was 12, I hadn't just gotten up and walked away? Who knows, even better, who cares? What if, What if, What if?

Yes, there have been influential people in my life but I am the most influential! I have total control over my destiny! I control my future! ME ME ME! You might try to coax me to choose one thing over another. But I make the decision! It is all in my hands! God help me, but I need to stand behind every decision I have ever made and I have to OWN them. Good or bad, they are 100% mine and only mine. I can't blame anyone for any of the decisions I have made, but I don't have to share the credit, either! One hundred percent, good or bad it is all mine! I win alone, or I lose alone!

You can call me conceited or you can call me self-aware. But you won't call me scared and you won't call me weak!

Prompt:

Write about a lesson you’ve learned the hard way.

Lesson: water and electricity do not mix
Age: about 5 years old
Teacher: self-taught
Outcome: I lived to tell about it

Details:

My brother, Dave, who is fifteen years older than me was working in the garage on his Ford Gran Torino. My parents had gone out for dinner, and Dave was baby-sitting. It was a warm, rainy evening. I used to love playing in the rain, so I was out in the driveway, in my sock-feet, splashing and running in the rain puddles. Dave and his friend Joe were in the garage using a power grinder on the car. They were on the opposite side of the car when I came back into the garage. I stood there in my sopping wet socks and turned to Dave, exclaiming, "Hey, my feet feel funny". Dave looked at me and then my feet and promptly told me to get off the extension cord. Apparently, the electricity was flowing through my socks and making my feet all tingly!

Oct. 3 Prompt:

Do you speak a second language? If so, what inspired you to learn it?
If not, what language are you interested in learning?

When I was in high school, I needed to take three years of a foreign language to get my Regents diploma. I decided to learn French because my family spent a month in Canada for vacation each year. I was so excited to be able to read all the labels on the packages because they were written in English and French. I thought I would have a great advantage over everyone because of all the exposure I would have. Well, that didn't work out too well. I don't remember anything that I learned in that class and I NEVER learned to 'roll' my "r's". Apparently, people in Rochester, NY speak with a 'hard a' and that makes speaking French rather problematic.

I believe that they now offer sign language in high school. I think that would be wonderful to learn because Rochester has a large deaf community. It is a beautiful language to watch, if you have ever had the opportunity.

Theoretically, I would love to learn to speak 'animal', just like Dr. Doolittle. That would make me the very best Vet Tech EVER! I would be able to find out exactly what was bothering each animal and probably fix things before they got a lot worse. In veterinary medicine, we really need to wait until the animal shows signs of an illness, which could be late in a disease. However, if the animal could tell us when it started to feel 'off' or when a pain was mild, we might be able to fix the disease before it manifested itself into something worse! Then instead of the little piggy going weee! weee! weee! all the way home I would hear "I got stung by a bee" all the way home!

Prompt: We all have ‘pet-peeves’. Write about some of yours!

I have so many pet peeves that I almost wonder if I am just intolerant!
*Butterfly2B* I can't stand it when people smack their lips or chew too loud
*Butterfly2B* I don't like when people whistle or hum when I am thinking
*Butterfly2B* I don't like it when people get loud and obnoxious when I am trying to work
*Butterfly2B* People who force their opinions on others irritate me
*Butterfly2B* I don't like it when people think they are better than others

Out of all of these, I think when people chew loudly irritates me the most. I just don't like hearing other people chew when they eat. It is gross and obnoxious. I really don't think I should be six feet away from you and know when you bite into an apple or a chip. Kindly keep it to yourself. What is worse is there are certain times of the month when noise can get the only nerve I have left. It takes all of me to not scream at the top of my lungs and lose my s*** over it. Many of my family members chew loudly and it makes family reunions awful! I think the most aggravating time when people chew loudly is when I am in class. We are allowed to eat during class and at least one of the girls brings in Cheerios. She sits at the table next to mine and eats them one by one! YES! One by one. She puts one in her mouth and chomps it, then chew it. Then she grabs the next. CHOMP...chew chew chew! And another CHOMP chew chew chew. Then she grabs her soda SLURP, CHOMP chew chew chew. You guys should have heard her during the math final!

Now that I have proclaimed my pet peeves, I think I really am just plain intolerant. None of these things will harm me at all! Yet, even as I write about them I can feel myself getting anxious and disturbed. Makes you wonder how we can all exist if everyone has pet peeves like I do!

Of course, I don't do anything that annoys anyone else... cause I am PERFECT!

OCT 1 Prompt: What are your goals for October?
Personal or professional, big or small...doesn't matter! We want to encourage you!

Wow! Talk about cobwebs! I haven't written in this thing since last June. I know, right? It has been over a year since I have shared my thoughts, dreams, failures, and sparkling personality. But seriously, where has the time gone, and what exactly have I been doing during all this time? More importantly, what do I plan on doing with the next thirty-one days?

First, I have spent most of my free time since last October working on college classes. I decided to go back and earn my degree in Veterinary Technology. When I graduate I will have an Associates Degrees in Veterinary Technology, and after that, I will take the VTNE (Veterinary Technician National Exam). This won't be until April 2020. Until then, I will be taking up to four classes a semester at Medaille College. The classes are designed for students who work full time so we take one class at a time, with each class taking seven weeks. We meet once a week for four hours! Most of the learning we do ourselves during the week with the class mainly being a review and testing. Right now I am not enrolled in a class because I already have credit for it from taking it before. (That is a totally different story).

As for my plans for October, because I am not taking a class right now, I am trying to relax and enjoy the things that are put on the back burner during classes. This includes hanging around Writing.com more than I have been. And what better way to do that then to spend time with my buddies at the 30DBC? I mean who else would I want to waste time with than the likes of Brother Nature and Fivesixer ? I am positive they have missed me as well! *Wink*

I am also planning on going to the Cohocton Fall Festival with my brother and sister-in-law next Sunday. The next weekend, my cousins in South Dayton will be graced with my presence! Hopefully, my husband and I will get a chance to visit the Red Pandas at the Seneca Park Zoo. They are not as cute as the Giant ones but I may be a bit biased!

My classes start again on the 23rd, but I hope to stick with the blogging right until the end of the month. If you see me missing at least you will know why...feel free to drop a message or two when I disappear. I tend to pop on the site every once and a while and would like to know I am missed...

A shard of light pierces the dark, illuminating my failures,
drawing attention to mistakes,
exposing my fragile ego.

Where can I take cover and hide?
How can I survive this display
of all of my perfections?
Turn the sun from me, make it dark.

I know it's tempting but please don't feed the pigeons when we are walking past St. Marks.

Oh! What a lovely day. I adored the Amphitheater. I can not even imagine the history that this unique building has seen. Could I be standing in the same spot that Caesar once stood? Amazing! Venice is such a beautiful city and the tour highlighting Romeo and Juliet was top-notch.
Oh! What light in yonder window breaks?
Oh it is the East and Juliet is the sun....

not bad for reading it some thirty years ago, eh?

Lyn's a sly fox , where did you find this restaurant? The food is exquisite. I had the Beef Cheeks and they were superb! The sauce they were served in had just the right amount of garlic - just a bit over the Dracula-killer level! The meat just melted in my mouth! The house wine was fantastic and only about the price of a boxed wine in the states - and much better I might add!

I wish I had read all of the instructions from Lyn's a sly fox regarding the pigeons because here I sit again...

I finally made it! You guys have got to keep a better eye on me...I get lost so easily. You would think that would be difficult being a rather large black and white bear.

Lyn's a sly fox , these apartments are wonderful, much better than what I slept in while in Morocco! I mean, I don't think I should have been sleeping with the camels!

Jellyfish-Vote Green on May 2! , thanks for meeting me at the airport! I loved your sign... did you paint it yourself? In case the rest of you didn't see it, it read "Hey Panda! Over Here, and I brought your leash!" VERY FUNNY! HAHAHA!

I expected that we would be serenaded by a real Venetian but instead we got this from Fivesixer and friends... https://youtu.be/jSrT1suSLfE

Where is everyone? I have been around and around. Where is Fivesixer and Lyn's a sly fox ? I mean seriously, I have been in Morocco for three days waiting to find out where the next stop is and nothing! Nobody to be found anywhere! I have had enough drinks at the Casablanca Bar to kill a small animal (good thing I am a large bear). I think I better reread the itinerary again just to make sure I am not lost here...

Minutes later...

MONACO....I am supposed to be in MONACO? Good grief! This could be one of the worst trips I have ever been on! Then again, wait until I show the pictures to everyone! I saw some real hotties here!

Hey Guys! I am still at the airport! I never knew that as a Panda, I am considered a Chinese National! I only have my US passport and these Custom guys are a nasty lot. I was right behind Lyn's a sly fox when they nabbed me and took me to a small gray room with no windows. There is one table with three metal chairs (rather uncomfortable chairs). One oversized 'gentleman' came in and offered me a coffee but when I took it, it was very cold and bitter.

I think I heard Jellyfish-Vote Green on May 2! and Prosperous Snow celebrating go giggling past the door, but I couldn't yell loud enough for them to hear me. Somebody has got to get me out of this mess! Lyn's a sly fox , can you talk some sense into these guys and get me back into the fun of backpacking?
