The experience of two patients in St. Francis Cabrini Mental Hospital. One was admitted as a violent psychotic, while the other has a personality disorder that effectively shuts her away from society, afraid to form bonds with anyone for fear that she will be discarded and abandoned.
Housed together, they must learn to make the best of their situation and make it through the daily routines of living in a lunatic asylum. The hospital's director, Walter Althaus, discovers that something is different about the newest patient, and begins a harsh therapy regimen that may end up killing her. Her roommate, and her well-meaning but subordinate physician, are all that can save her.
