Naomi Goldberg witnessed a crime and is moved to hide in a small town to be protected.
In Plain View
Chapter one

Naomi Goldberg shifted uncomfortably in the seat of her new Durango. Mile after mile had flashed by as she struggled to keep up with the moving van ahead. The last few days had tested her inexpert driving skills, and her nerves had been on edge longer than that. Worse, she still missed Meylets, her service dog, even though it had been more than a year since she witnessed the murder. Meylets had saved her life, but had died doing it. Not being able to take her seizure medicine during this long drive was scary as well.

I never planned on leaving New York, she thought, but here I am driving deeper and deeper south. Miami would have been nice.

No, she had family there. So that meant instead she was going to some little town in Tennessee that nobody ever heard of. Well, nobody in New York, she amended, sighed and muttered, “A breyre hob ikh?” As if I have a choice.

She frowned as she focused her soft brown eyes on the ever lowering gas gage. She wanted to stop anyway and stretch her legs.

Thankful for the Bluetooth, she contacted the truck ahead of her. “Could we make a pit stop? I’m getting low on gas.”

“Sure thing,” answered the deep male voice. She blinked and reminded herself that this was Jerry. She still didn’t know him well, but he was to be her handler while hiding here in the south. He spoke to the van driver and came back. “The next exit has a truck stop. We’ll pull off there.”

“Wonderful,” she breathed. The van ahead turned on its signal light and she copied it. She stayed close as they entered the exit ramp, but pulled into the car area at the truck stop.
