Why Auctions and Raffles?

Why are there always so many auctions and raffles to be found on the "Activities @ Writing.Com? Isn't this a writing site? Shouldn't we have activities that center around writing? Yes, of course we should focus on writing. That is after all why we came to this site. The "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com is always brimming with contest run by members for members to explore the various forms of writing. At any given time, there are poetry contests, short story, and longer story contests featured. Every genre has loyal followers who enjoy to write in it and read others' work in it.

Running a contest can get pricy for the host. This is where auctions and raffles come in. Those activities help fund many contests and also many review forums. Reviewing is one of the main ways we writers can communicate with each other in a meaningful way. Most groups who have reviews as part of their mission give out review credits. Some forums are set up to do nothing but find pieces of writing and other items on Writing.Com to review.

Auctions and raffles are designed to create a profit for one or more groups. In an auction, members pledge to review, give merit badges, signatures, or other goodies to the highest bidder on a package. In raffles, numbers are assigned a price in gift points, each number representing a ticket. At the end of the raffle, the host rolls the virtual dice to determine the winners of the grand prize or a portion of the proceeds. Virtual dice are fair, and, best of all, the rolls can be tracked so anybody wanting to check it out can see that the numbers were true.

These types of activities are also another good way to meet other members. Since many auction packages have reviews in them, they are a great way to buy reviews. Some members send out amazing and detailed reviews even for longer pieces, which are hard to get just from posting an item to the site. Those packages are coveted and often earn the auction large sums of gift points. Check out the selection of raffles and auctions below as well as those on the activities page. Choose your participation based on what you could win or which groups you're supporting through your participation. Remember, it takes just one raffle ticket with the right number to carry off a big prize.
