The real purpose of springtime colors.
My yard out back is all ablaze with vibrant colors.
The blossoms -- shiny white of English dogwood,
azaleas pink and red, the trumpet vine so laden
with orange trumpets -- are trying to be understood.

These flower only in early springtime every year.
The scientists say this outburst of colors serves
the plants’ requirements, attracting insects to aid
with pollination, which their life cycle preserves.

But springtime also brings the robin with brightly
colored chest and flocks of pretty finches, blue
or yellow in hue, soon followed by hummingbirds
with their fluorescent green, all passing through.

The scientists say this is due to normal migration
of birds returning north; it happens every spring.
A poet sees … after winter’s cold and drab emptiness,
the colors of spring are sent to make the heart sing.

These vibrant springtime colors renew the soul of Man,
reminding him that beauty in life is always near at hand.
