I have not written anything for a long while. Today I posted a new poem, first one written in 2018. It is about feeling abandoned by a loved one, with a twist.

Left Alone  (E)
A rhyming poem about feeling abandoned by a loved one.

I hope you will check it out.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE! Now available as a Kindle e-book on Amazon: "Poetry by an Elderly, Liberal, White Guy"

This is the latest collection of my poetry. It contains 100 poems, which address a wide variety of topics through poems written in a mixture of poetic formats (rhyming, free-verse, acrostic). Some poems are humorous; some explore being elderly; some are political and topical; other poems are more general, looking at everyday life and Nature . Every reader should find something to enjoy and to be thought-provoking. Why not check out my new Kindle book? I'd sure appreciate it!

When I first started writing poetry back in 2001, I enjoyed writing poems that told a story. I wrote many of such story poems, which I labelled a storoem (stor- plus -oem). Many storoems are to be found in my portfolio and in my published poetry collections. Therefore, I was quite pleased to discover that Lisa Noe now has a monthly story-poem contest:

I encourage everyone to check out her contest and to try their hand at writing a poem that tells a story.

May 2018 treat each of you kindly!

My fifth and newest poetry book is now published at Amazon as a print paperback book. I entitled the book "Poetry by an Elderly, Liberal, White Guy".

The book contains 100 of my storoems and poems. This poetry captures my reflections on many aspects of daily life, from running errands, taking photographs, facing one’s mortality, parenting, childhood memories, Christmas ornaments as a tour through life, watching ‘Wheel of Fortune’ with a good puzzle solver, the effects of designing TV shows, aspects of Nature, America’s cultural history, the perils of being elderly, and dealing with Trump as president. Readers of all ages will find subjects of interest to them, from small daily events to life-changing national issues.

Yesterday was corn day! My wife Linda and I drove down early in the morning from Shreveport to Ed Lester Farms outside Coushatta, LA. We bought 100 ears (2 bushels) of corn, a bushel of pinto beans, some new potatoes, and some fresh blueberries. We spent the rest of the day shucking, blanching, cutting the kernels off the cob, bagging, and freezing the corn. We got 20 bags of corn cut off the cob plus a half dozen bags of corn on the cob. By us, I mean Linda did all that work except I helped with the shucking. Plus she made vegetable soup and then baked two dozen blueberry muffins using the fresh blueberries. I did shell the pinto beans, which Linda then blanched and bagged. Hard day ... but we have started the process of restocking our freezers with fresh produce. Good eating later!

Anyone else putting fresh produce up in the freezer to have for later eating enjoyment?

I wrote a poem about us putting up corn back in 2004:
 Summer Gold  (ASR)
A free verse poem about stocking the freezer with summer's golden harvest.

We were younger then and put up more bushels of corn than we can do today.

Not sure what was going on last Monday, 29 May, but my portfolio received the most views it's ever had. Of the 514 items in my portfolio (all but a couple of which are poetry), 512 items received a total of 1,074 views. Amazing! Thank you to whoever was involved in accomplishing this. I appreciate your checking out my poetry, and I hope you enjoyed browsing in my port. I cannot imagine that number of views of my portfolio in one day will ever be equaled or surpassed in the future.

I almost cringe every time I see an email with a review from a newly joined member because I half-expect their rating of my poem to be substantially lower than previous ratings received. For example, a poem of mine that has an overall 4.5 rating after a dozen or more ratings and that has been awarded an awardicon will receive a rating from a 2.5 to 3.5 from a newbie. Can they not see the poem has been more highly rated by numerous other members previously? Can they not see it has been awarded an awardicon? What makes them think their lower rating is appropriate in view of such evidence? I just don't get it!

When I first arrived on this site years ago as a poet, I spent some time reading numerous poems to determine what I thought was an average poem, a better than average poem, and a worse than average poem for this site. I read reviews and then read the poem itself to see whether I thought the rating and comments were appropriate. Only after I had been here a while and felt comfortable that my rating and comments could be appropriate for this site did I send reviews. This seems like a reasonable approach to me. Often newbies will register and start sending out ratings and reviews the same day even before they publish anything to their own portfolio or enter their bio. They certainly cannot have much of a feel for how to review here. I just don't get why they do that!
