  Hey Mystery folks! I am happy to be your guest editor this week with a look at the famous British Crime Writer Ann Cleeves!
Ann Cleeves says:
"Good short stories have a force and a clarity which it's almost impossible to achieve in a novel. That's why I enjoy reading them. I know that each word has been chosen with care.

I love writing. It's a treat. And these days it's squashed into weekends and evenings. More of my time is spent talking to readers, not just to promote my own work, but a huge range of authors who deserve to reach a wider audience.

Ann Cleeves
 Recently, I was watching some episodes of the crime series Vera, a show which I enjoy. One of the episodes had the author speak about the work so I thought I would check her out. I found out that she also wrote Shetland, another show I got caught up in a while back.
Ann Cleeves was born in Herefordshire in 1954 She went to University of Sussex but dropped out to take up numerous jobs including a cook at the Fair Isle bird observatory, auxiliary coastguard, probation officer, library outreach worker and child care officer. While at the bird sanctuary she met her husband Tim who was an ornithologist. They married and lived at Hilbre, a tidal island nature reserve In the Shetlands. They were the only people there and it was a rough life without amenities. That is when she began to use her time writing. Needless to say they were happy to leave in 1987 with their two daughters, first to Northhumberland, in which set many of her stories, and then in 2006 to the North East.
It is fascinating how her experiences show up in the settings of her writings. Both Vera and Shetland feature the wild lands by the sea. The settings in Vera vary from city to harbours to the wilds of the moors. She has Vera living in her father's isolated cabin up by the sea. Her work in various fields gives some reality to her work.
In 2006 she won her first award for "Black Raven" from the Shetland series: the Duncan Laurie Dagger. In 2014 she was granted an Honourary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Sunderland. In 2017 She earned the Cartier Diamond Dagger from the Crime Writing Association for sustained excellence in crime fiction. She began writing in 1986 and has written at least 40 books, 8 book series including her first titled "Palmer Jones Books" with lots of bird watching. 
She was always a great supporter of libraries as she was an avid reader. In 2022 she earned the OBE for services to reading and libraries. Today she still funds a reading program where reading coaches or "bibliotherapists" go into prisons to read and read to those with mental health issues. She believes that stories can help folks cope. The idea traces back to her own experience, when having to deal with her husband's breakdown and subsequent Bi Polar designation. She says that writing and reading a bit each day helped her cope.
