Quotes
New Year's Eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights.
-Hamilton Wright Mabie
A happy New Year! Grant that I may bring no tear to any eye when this New Year in time shall end, let it be said I've played the friend, have lived and loved and labored here, and made of it a happy year.

Happy New Year Suckers
What year these events transpire is of no consequence. Where they transpire is not important. The time is always, and the place is everywhere.
I went to the nearest window and stared out at the rain, but I couldn't see it. It was New Year's Eve, and I found myself alone again. At the stroke of midnight, the New Year approached from a dark corner. His face was as smooth as cream in a saucer, and the only color he offered was the brilliant, limpid, burning blue of his eyes. His size and presence gave him the almost mythological aura of one who has battled giants and dragons. His smile was as thin as a filleting knife.
"Are you a writer?" he asked.
"Yes, I write when the urge overtakes me."
He smiled and said, "I read all kinds of books, and rewrite them in my mind to make them what I want. In my version, every book ends with everyone dead."
"That's kind of sick," I replied.
"Yes," he said. "Isn't it?"
Then, with a deep growl, he began to transform.
A milky stain of infection began to spread across him. He broke out in pustules, hives, and lesions that smelled of rotting meat. Blisters formed, swelled, and popped; ugly sores broke open and wept a watery yellow fluid. His flesh decomposed into a sludge that resembled pus.
"Damn, I love the New Year," he chuckled, then left.
