Hook 'Em! Part 2
My last newsletter talked about the importance of a great first line to capture the attention of the reader. It pulls them in and sets them up to be wow-ed by your story. I also had a mini-contest with opening lines from famous novels, and I was happy with the participation! You all really know your opening lines! 
A few participants shared their favorite opening lines, from their own work and from published works:
Sum1  : “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I am your host, Robert Tanner. Tonight my guest is Dan Montgomery, the renowned magician and psychic. Welcome Dan, how are you tonight?” From "Dan's Magic" [E]
Jeannie Cheering for Martel  : My favorite first line is from the novel, “Darker Than Amber” by John D. MacDonald, A Travis McGee series = "We were about to give up and call it a night when somebody dropped the girl off the bridge."
Osyrus  shared the first line of a story currently being worked on: "He was always in the wrong place at the wrong time, or the right place at the right time, but he wouldn't realize that until the end of it all." Doesn't that sound like a great start to a story? I hope it's up on WDC soon!
BIG BAD WOLF is hopping  : Best opening line I've written - "Five Minutes" [13+] - “Five minutes,” the voice said. “You have five minutes to do the most good before I take your soul to Judgment.” Fave in a book - got a few, but here's one from "Eilalia!" of the "Redwall" series. "It was a night for raiding." A good opening line has to sink its teeth into the reader, and never let go.
Elle - on hiatus : I've shared it before, but it's worth sharing again. My favourite opening line ever is this one:
'The tavern smelled of piss and disappointment.' from "OCT Audition: The Reading- Part 1" by Bri*Star
And here are the answers to the opening lines from last month's newsletter:
1. "It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen." - 1984 by George Orwell
2. "If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth." - Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
3. “Someone must have slandered Josef K., for one morning, without having done anything truly wrong, he was arrested.” - The Trial by Franz Kafka
4. “Call me Ishmael.” - Moby Dick by Herman Melville
5. "All children, except one, grow up." - Peter Pan (a.k.a. Peter and Wendy) by J.M. Barrie
6. "There was no possibility of taking a walk that day." - Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
7. "Mother died today. Or maybe, yesterday; I can't be sure." - The Stranger by Albert Camus
8. "It was now lunch time and they were all sitting under the double green fly of the dining tent pretending that nothing had happened.". - The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber by Ernest Hemingway
9. "It was the day my grandmother exploded." - The Crow Road by Iain Banks
10. "Time is not a line but a dimension, like the dimensions of space." - Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood
I had such a good response from people about opening lines that I considered creating a quiz testing knowledge of opening lines, or perhaps an In & Out asking for the opening line of the book you're currently reading. Then I had another thought: Why not let you create something new? And I can turn it into another contest!
My challenge to you: Create a contest or activity revolving around opening lines. The only rules are that it has to be newly created and it has to be your own item. It can be any type of interactive: Quiz, In & Out, Crossword Puzzle, Forum, etc.
