Like jewels, the skewbald cattle graze beneath the sun
PRECIOUS COWS
September 12, 2008

Tumbled rocks
glistening on the hillside
some homeward bound,
some standing 'round.
Hoofed rocks
with beating hearts 'til day is done
in the dying summer sun.

Shaggy rocks
grazing lazily
staring out across the meadow trees.
Four-legged rocks
tossing hairy heads
against their tall dry grassy beds.

River rocks
polished by the browsing brook
tongues snooping under leaves that autumn shook.
Fallen rocks
embedded in the nocturnal bath
of the umber kibbled path.

Skewbald rocks
dropped like grounded kites, dimly,
beneath dark and dusky skies.
Breathing rocks
made of flesh and blood and might
with curly coats all red and white.
