Whispers in the Dark
Lylia crept forward, fingers trembling on the cold, wet bark of the ancient willow. Each creak of the branches held a sinister echo, swallowed by the velvety-dark night. Beneath her sneakers, fallen leaves gave way with a brittle crunch, and the shadowed woods seemed alive with unspoken whispers.

There, half-hidden amongst the thick tangle of roots, sat a rock. Not just any rock. It was smooth as onyx with veins of glimmering quartz, entirely unnatural in this thick woodland. She couldn't explain why it drew her like a whispered summons, radiating something between danger andโ€ฆ allure.

She placed one hand cautiously on the rock's surface. It was surprisingly warm, sending a tingling sensation shooting up her arm. The woods around her blurred, replaced by a sense of utter vertigo. It wasn't the world twisting; it was something shifting within her.

Eyes snapping open, Lylia gasped. The darkness receded into the familiar twilight of dusk. Gone was the ominous willow, replaced by a scattering of birch trees that dappled her face in gentle sunlight. The rock was there, its veins no longer aglow but dull like any other stone. Had she imagined it all? Did something in the depths of the woods shift the fabric of reality itself, beckoning with both promise and peril?

Her hand rested on the cool, ordinary rock, and she shivered. She didn't know what strange magic touched her that day, but a prickle of unease clung to her. Something within her had awokenโ€”an uncanny sense that beneath the dappled light of a normal world, secrets stirred in the dark. And some secrets were better left untouched.
