Poetry: so precious to the poets
even unreceived, unread, unsought

because the act itself - of writing
saves the writer. We all know this

we who wrap our selves in words
making metaphors of muck & mud

when life is ruinous, or empty, or
grief chokes the heart like smoke

or beauty wakes us up to wonder
in the trembling trance of gratitude

& when together, here, our gathering
becomes a sort of saving of the soul.
