This is due to a newly expired patent on the GIF technology. Previously our system converted uploaded .GIF images to .PNG images. In the conversion, the ability to use transparencies within images was lost. With GIF support fully implemented within Writing.Com, GIF images can safely use their transparency feature. :: Better Yet: GIF Image Animations ::  Writing.Com members with Premium Membership or higher can now upload Animated GIFs to their portfolios! Animation can be used to add another dimension to your presence within Writing.Com. Please note: Animated GIFs are limited to 200x200 pixels in size (compared to 400x400 for non-animated images). They have the same 100k maximum file size as other images types.
