Family Tree

In our soft wood
His wedge drove
Deft swung the sledge gleaming
Through the heart
Cleaving each hewn member
The trunk of our maple --
Core dismembered and stacked
One by one
Burned to ash, lost
In the fires of memory --
Buried beneath bare,
Frozen earth
Centuries

I wanted to expand, expound on this, but thought, maybe I shouldn't.

Rewritten:

Family Tree

In our soft wood
His wedge drove
Deft swung the sledge gleaming
Through the heart
Cleaving each hewn member
The trunk of our childhood maple --
Core dismembered and stacked
One by one
Burned to ash, lost
In the fires of memory --
Buried beneath our bare,
Frozen cemeteries
Centuries to come.
