dreams of money

i dreamed that i was in a hold-up
they demanded of me my money
& then they called me a fool
as a fool & her money are soon parted

i dreamed that like a squirrel my cheeks
were stuffed not with nuts & seeds
but with copper coins their foul
blood-like flavour flooding my mouth

i dreamed that the pockets
of my jacket & pants
were flickering aflame on fire
holes burned in by my money

i dreamed that cash was king & malevolent
ruling with interest from a sparkle castle

i dreamed that i found a gold coin in the mud
which dissolved in my palm into golden oil
the inscription melting into my hand

i dreamed i was quickly weeding my garden
& mechanically in among the violets
i dug up the root of all evil
