Fireworks

July night
hangs heavy,
its breath hot and wet,
speaking steamy thoughts,
thundering over crickets’ song.
Then the sky explodes
red, white and blue.
We gasp in awe
at the beauty raining down
on our hearts
and on the yellow flowers in the grass
beside our blanket.
