Band aids on a mortal wound
I said I sympathised,
and I meant it,
but I never understood.

And I didn't know that
I didn't understand until
it hit too close to home.

Meaningless platitudes and
empty acknowledgements
are no substitute for someone
who has drowned in the same
inky depths.
