Gratitude

Time has been compared to sand
running through an hourglass;
an unstoppable fall of grains.

I imagine instead the sand in my hand,
slipping through my fingers.
Sometimes the little grains are chances that dissolve and fall;
chances at all I wish to do and feel and be.

There are times in my life when I worry
I can't stop each little grain from falling
mercilessly, like time itself passing by.

And then there are times when my hand feels full again,
and the sand is as though warmed by the summer sun;
times when the sand is solid in my grasp.

I am thankful I get to experience this refill,
time and time again in my life.
