Resolutions - Week Two

Here are Week Twos Prompts;

I hereby resolve NOT to make any New Year's Resolutions at all.

I did take the first week’s prompts to heart. I started writing 300 words. Seemed to pan out. I won two flash fiction rounds so far.

I rarely, if ever, make New Year’s resolutions. I don’t like to fail. And giving yourself unrealistic goals is a perfect set-up for failure. Then you feel bad all year because you didn’t achieve the goal(s) you set. I get enough guilt from just living a somewhat normal life. I don’t need the extra guilt.

I resolve to take a nice healthy hike!

I can get on board with this suggestion. I won’t take it as a resolution. I consider this an essential for life.

I used to live near Yellowstone. What a wonderful place. But alas, life took us to the plains of SE Montana. Far away from the mountains.

No longer can I jump in the car and in 10 minutes be in a national park or a national forest. I would do this every day or so, just to get away. The dog and I would take long walks, hikes, in the woods.

So when we moved to Roundup, I decided I still needed to walk. So I walk around town. I walk to church, to the post office, to the grocery store, to the pharmacy. I even walked to my physical therapy appointments when my knee was buggered up. I like to walk. Any weather, doesn’t matter.

Now this weekend we are to get a cold spell. Negative temperatures are forecast, -20° or more. Okay. You can still get out and walk. Just dress for the weather. I have on our refrigerator a clipping - “There is no such thing as bad
weather, only inappropriate clothing.” So that is really the key. I have a wondrous coat rated to -20°, boots rated to -30°, a face mask, mittens, hats.

We will have to shut off our laundry water tomorrow night. It always freezes at -10°. We’ve tried all sorts of fixes, but shutting off the water is the only one that works we learned by trial and error. We cannot replumb the laundry area like we did the bathroom. And the kitchen plumbing is all interior, not against outside walls.

Many folks without garages plug in their vehicles during really cold spells. I don’t think the car we’re borrowing has a block heater, so we’ll take our chances with it.

Winter in the northern latitudes - not for the faint of heart!
