The Bridge - Week 31
It was March
a heavy snow fell overnight.
The wooden planks moaned
and popped as steel nails felt the cold.

The old bridge sang of battles long ago
horse hooves echoing in its tunnel,
soldiers watching souls
depart on moist clouds of breath.

But it was March
and morning brought a glaring sun.
It reduced these memories to tears,
they fell into the river and drowned.

The plaque on the bridge reads “Fort Beausejour”

Fort Beauséjour – Fort Cumberland National Historic Site
In the heart of Mi'kma'ki, in the Chignecto isthmus, this star-shaped fort became the scene of three acts of war between France and Great Britain, the deportation of the Acadians and the tearing apart of British North America.
