Cat's Pawprints In Early Spring Mud
A dog-star moon melts in the sky
above snow,
licks rough edges of tire tracks,
in anticipation of warmer breath,
lifts heels from curbs,
crumbles yellow brick,
secures a stronghold of the season.
Pigeons groomed backs
strikingly warn of spring
as cat’s paw prints sink into mud,
pigeons pristine feathers
momentarily hung in wet salt
Broken pear tree
dead branches settle
amid the stones, where the cat might
have climbed if she had been
more daring.
The mercurial scales of bark
splinter from shock
as contagious as an illusive wind
chime that dangles just above
reach
weightless,
feverish.
