Snowfall

It is the contentment on wintry days
when the man with the coal eyes stares
and winks,
as if asking me to join him with
conspiring for another inch of snow,
that makes me shiver unexplained
berry red-cheeked
like a char-woman sweeping the front
steps clean of it.
December brings the cold weather
like a Viking ship sees land.

I come in from out in the cold
and set my cup of cocoa on the
mahogany table.

There was truly that walk in
milky wonder.

All. It is in my best interest to
take the risk of a freezing body
to celebrate the science of ice
gods as Mum, somewhere south, calls
to tell me how the sea looks
with a sunburn.

Did Venus don a coat in Ancient
Times?
And if so, was she smiling about
the snowfall?
