The adventures of my nine year old son Jonah, who has autism.

the mime's apprentice
90% of the time it is Andy who takes Jonah to the park...sometimes I tag along, and once in a while I'll bring him to the park myself, but mostly it is Andy who takes him.

Andy tells me that lately all the little kids, even kids younger than Jonah, have been asking him why Jonah doesn't talk and why he makes those funny grunting noises.

He tells them, simply, that "he isn't as smart as you are."

That usually suffices. Kids like to think they're smart, and they usually are nice to Jonah. I don't know what I would say. It's hard to explain autism to an adult, let alone a 2 or 3 year old.

I said he should tell them Jonah is a mime's apprentice.
