          Dreams

Dreams
drag my eyes from sleep.
Will the words revolving
in my memory
coalesce into meaning, determine
themselves meant for reality?

No voice
confirms my hopes.

Silence
greets me with a Judas kiss;
traitorous saliva chills
my soul,
smothers listening hope.

Stillborn
cadences betray me,
refrains silence
into reverie;
forestalled voice
strangles into dream.
