Chapter Two: Waiting for Cathleen
Dick Panse was still sitting in the buggy, waiting. And she pointed to the bare, lathed walls. John Elliot sat on the edge of the bed till it grew dark. With a wild toss of its head the horse bounded away into the night.

Most of the time the doctor stayed on the hill. The full significance of what was happening had, so far, not become clear to John Elliot. He noticed that misunderstanding and interpreted it in his own way.

Most of the time the doctor stayed on the hill.
They think I am crazy, he said to himself.

Never again would anger have power to move his heart.
Or, if you cant wait till next week, wait a day or so; and Cathleen can go with you by train.
