| I'm still awaiting the arrival of my textbooks, which are coming from four different places nationwide and which should have been here days ago. I didn't do the Con Law reading, figuring skipping it altogether would be better than bumming a book from someone else for the third time in a row, and also figuring I probably wouldn't get cold-called in class, because there are one hundred fifty people in the section, and the professor only calls on one person a day. There was only a two percent chance he would call on me, literally one in fifty, and he did. I said, "I'm not prepared to talk about McCulloch v. Maryland, sorry," and he moved on to the next person, and that probably doesn't sound like the intense failure that it was, but, it was. It's being the only black girl in a class full of prodigies and having every one of them judging you not only on your inherent right to share their classroom but also on your innate intelligence and your degree of conscientious preparation, too, and failing their test. It's being stared down for the subsequent ninety minutes by one hundred forty-nine pairs of pale eyes, and now even the ones I'm friends with, who know my textbooks are just late getting here, are feeling sorry for me and wondering probably whether it's some financial hardship (which it isn't, I just made a mistake entering the order) and also why I didn't just wikipedia the case to be safe, which, I have no answer to that, the odds were just tremendously in my favor, but decided to fuck me over. Fine. * After that, I was depressed, so I shuffled home and flopped down on my husband pillow, proceeded to start the reading for tomorrow. I was five minutes into dozing off when I remembered, out of the blue, that I was presently missing my second class of the day, which started at eleven-ten, of course, and NOT one-ten, like I remembered. I was ten minutes late. God damn it. * The other day, my mother made the comment that I am addicted to the Sims. She said it in the know-it-all voice she uses whenever she has just learned a new bit of psychobabble, from an O article or wherever, and is excited to assimilate it into her knowledge base by using it on me. I would be a huge idiot if I didn't know she was right, but also, I think it's a relatively harmless addiction, as addictions go, and it's one I can't feed very often, as I made a conscious decision not to install the game on my school computer. I have to go home to play, and I have to deal with her to play in peace, and that level of bureaucracy usually makes it not worth it. Still, sometimes, like now (I'm sitting in LRW), it scares me how much I look forward to playing, how I strategize, sometimes days in advance, maximizing the hours I can spend on it tomorrow when I go home to get my hair done. Depending how fast the Metro runs, and whether I can catch a cab immediately from Glenmont, I can get in ninety minutes before I have to leave for the hairdresser, and, probably, another two and a half hours once I get home and before anyone else does.
