The People in our midst?

Agnes awoke in a sweat.
She had a long day mining gold on the Moon ahead ..
The ruling elite had increased their allotment.
She felt she would never return to Earth as she
watched the blue planet rise over the barren Moon.

"Why am I stuck here? I can do better."
Agnes muttered as she stood in the sonic shower.
Water was rationed ..
"They'll replace me with a robot. Cheap bastards."
Agnes slipped into her skintight space suit and
stepped out onto the lunar sand .

Her breather was puffing and needed a cleaning.
She plugged her breather hose into her mining truck cab
and brushed the pebbles off the seat as the interior stabilized .
The gravity kicked on as her butt hit the seat.
"Hmm. 30 tons of gold today? God, what are they doing with it?"
Agnes slipped in a CD, Heaven's Gate.

The truck sensors scanned as it ground up the surface for gold.
"I hope were not going in a crater. I hate those drop offs."
Agnes assessed her findings and entered her manifest.
She was heading for a massive crater.
"Oh, swell." she sighed.
She reclined her seat and pressed the breather cleaning button.

The drop off felt like skydiving.
The landing felt like a trampoline.
Drilling and sweeping began as Agnes read her temperature guages.
The truck slowly ran its circle around the crater.
"Computer." Agnes audio commanded, "Is there any volcanic activity?"
The computer screen clicked, "None visible."

"Why is it so warm?" she continued.
The computer screen clicked, "Uncertain."
"Oh, great." Agnes was getting a bad vibe.
This could be a dormant volcano..
If she went too deep she would be toast.+
